THE WHALE OF LLANÇÀ? THIS IS THEIR (BRIEF) STORY
It is believed that this specimen was a male and that he was between 80 and 100 years old when he died. It was 1862 when, with its congeners, this fin whale migrated like every summer towards the Gulf of León. But it is not known how, it seems that he lost track of the group and got stuck in Llançà, Cap Ras.
The fin whale is the second largest cetacean species, after the blue whale. On the Mediterranean coast they can often be seen when they move in the summer from North Africa to the Ligurian Sea, where they feed on small crustaceans and fish. Like other cetaceans, it is a species affected by human activity and protected by various legislations.
His skeleton is now on display at the Museum of Natural Sciences in Barcelona. At the time this was bought by the University of Barcelona for 3,500 reais.
